About Kilimanjaro Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro's only approach from the north, beginning near the Kenyan border at 1,950 metres and traversing the mountain's dry, remote northern slopes before joining the summit crater at Gillman's Point and continuing to Uhuru Peak. Its northern exposure means significantly less rainfall than southern routes, making it one of the most reliable options during the April–May long rains when other routes become challenging. The trail passes through indigenous forest, moorland dotted with giant senecios, and open alpine desert — and is frequently described by guides as the route with the highest probability of elephant sightings in the lower forest zone. The Rongai Route sees approximately 8–10% of total Kilimanjaro trekkers annually according to TANAPA gate records, making it one of the least crowded summit approaches — an advantage for those seeking a more meditative mountain experience without sacrificing safety or infrastructure. The standard six-day itinerary descends via the Marangu route for variety and efficiency.

How to Get Here

Rongai Gate is 165 km from Moshi via Marangu and the Kenya border town of Loitokitok. Most operators arrange private transfers; the journey takes approximately 3 hours from Moshi.
