About Mount Kilimanjaro — Uhuru Peak

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's tallest mountain and the world's highest free-standing volcanic massif, rising dramatically from the Tanzanian savannah to 5,895 metres above sea level at Uhuru Peak. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the mountain hosts five distinct ecological zones — cultivated farmland, montane forest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the iconic arctic summit — each supporting unique biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth. Every year approximately 50,000 trekkers from over 60 countries attempt the summit, making Kilimanjaro one of the most climbed high-altitude peaks in the world. Six official routes — Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Umbwe — offer varied landscapes and acclimatisation profiles. The Machame Route, nicknamed the 'Whisky Route', is widely regarded as the most scenic approach. According to TANAPA records (2022), the overall summit success rate across all routes is approximately 65%, rising to over 85% on the longer seven-day itineraries that allow superior acclimatisation. The mountain's glaciers, which have retreated over 85% since 1912 (Thompson et al., 2009, PNAS), serve as a visible barometer of global climate change and remain a subject of active scientific research. Guided climbs are mandatory by law; all operators must be licensed by the Kilimanjaro National Park authority.

How to Get Here

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), 45 km east of Moshi town. All major routes begin from TANAPA-registered gates: Machame Gate (1,490 m), Marangu Gate (1,879 m), and Londorossi Gate (2,360 m) for Lemosho and Northern Circuit. Shuttle buses and private transfers are widely available from Moshi and Arusha. All climbers must be accompanied by a licensed guide; self-guided ascents are prohibited.

Traveller Tips

  • Summit night starts at midnight

All routes start the final push to Uhuru Peak around midnight to arrive at sunrise (~6–7am). Temperatures drop to -15°C to -20°C. Pack hand warmers, a balaclava, and double-layer gloves. Headtorch with fresh batteries is essential.
  • Lemosho Route offers the best success rate

The 8-day Lemosho Route has a ~90% summit success rate vs ~85% for Machame and ~50% for the shorter 5-day Marangu. The extra days above 4,000m dramatically improve acclimatisation. Always choose at least 7 days.
  • Acclimatise properly — altitude kills more climbs than fitness

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the primary reason climbers turn back. The "climb high, sleep low" principle is built into multi-day routes like Machame and Lemosho. Never rush ascent days. Diamox (acetazolamide) can help — consult your doctor before departure.
