About Moshi Town

Moshi is the urban heart of the Kilimanjaro region — a lively, compact town of approximately 185,000 residents (NBS Tanzania, 2022) that serves as the primary base for all Kilimanjaro climbing expeditions and as a cultural hub for the Chagga people of the mountain's southern slopes. The town's economy is shaped by three pillars: tourism, coffee, and banana cultivation. The Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union (KNCU), headquartered in Moshi and founded in 1933, is one of Africa's oldest and most celebrated coffee cooperatives, and Moshi's central market overflows with premium Arabica beans, vanilla, cardamom, and fresh highland produce. Moshi's main street, Mawenzi Road, is lined with licensed climbing operators, gear shops, budget guesthouses, and restaurants serving everything from nyama choma (roasted meat) to Italian pasta — a legacy of the town's colonial history as a German East Africa administrative centre. The view of Kilimanjaro from Moshi's Uhuru Park on a clear morning — the snow-capped summit floating above a ring of clouds — is one of Tanzania's iconic urban vistas. Moshi is also the terminus of the TAZARA railway line and hosts the Moshi Urban Marathon, one of East Africa's largest road races, held annually in March.
