About Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Tour

Materuni Waterfall, plunging 80 metres into a lush ravine on Kilimanjaro's southwestern slopes, is one of Tanzania's most rewarding half-day excursions and remains largely off the mainstream tourist trail. The 2-hour forest hike from Materuni village (1,600 m) passes through dense montane rainforest, small-holder Arabica coffee plots, and banana groves tended by Chagga farming families. The falls flow strongest from March to May and October to December following seasonal rains. Most operators combine the waterfall hike with a traditional Chagga coffee tour — visitors pick ripe coffee cherries, hand-pulp them, sun-dry the beans, and roast them over an open fire before drinking freshly prepared coffee in a traditional homestead. The Kilimanjaro Arabica coffee cultivated on these slopes, known locally as 'Kibo Gold', is certified under the Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union (KNCU), one of Africa's oldest coffee cooperatives founded in 1933. This experience directly supports Chagga smallholder families and the Tanzania Cultural Tourism Programme (TCTP) community-based tourism network.
