About Marangu Route — Kilimanjaro

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most-travelled path to Kilimanjaro's summit, earning the playful nickname 'Coca-Cola Route' for its relative accessibility and the chain of A-frame dormitory huts that dot the trail. Unlike other Kilimanjaro routes where climbers sleep in tents, Marangu offers Mandara (2,720 m), Horombo (3,720 m), and Kibo (4,700 m) huts — a major comfort advantage in sub-zero summit conditions. The route ascends through lush montane rainforest rich with Colobus monkeys and endemic Impatiens kilimanjari, before emerging into the otherworldly heathlands carpeted with giant lobelias and groundsels. The standard itinerary spans five days, though adding an extra acclimatisation night at Horombo Hut raises summit success rates significantly. TANAPA data indicates Marangu accounts for roughly 30% of all Kilimanjaro climbers. The gate stands at 1,879 m above sea level, 95 km from Arusha and 47 km from Moshi town.

How to Get Here

Marangu Gate is 95 km from Arusha and 47 km from Moshi. Regular minibus transfers available from both towns. All permits and guide arrangements should be made through a TANAPA-licensed operator.
