About Lake Chala

Lake Chala is one of East Africa's most visually striking crater lakes — a perfectly circular caldera filled with intensely turquoise water that sits in a 100-metre-deep volcanic bowl on Kilimanjaro's eastern flank, straddling the border between Tanzania and Kenya at 852 metres above sea level. The lake is fed entirely by underground filtration of Kilimanjaro's glacial meltwater, maintaining an almost constant depth of 90–100 metres year-round despite having no visible surface inflow. Research by Verschuren et al. (2009, Nature) identified a 25,000-year sediment record in Lake Chala's floor, making it one of Africa's most important palaeoclimate archives. The emerald-walled cliffs host colonies of marabou storks and African fish eagles, while the lake supports a population of Nile crocodiles — swimming is discouraged. Kayaking and guided rim hikes are available through community operators in Taveta (Kenya side) and Holili town on the Tanzania side. The 45-minute rim walk offers 360-degree views of both Kilimanjaro and Kenya's Taita Hills on clear mornings.
