About Chagga Cultural Museum — Moshi

The Chagga are the indigenous people of Kilimanjaro's fertile southern slopes and are renowned across Tanzania for their sophisticated pre-colonial irrigation systems (mfongo), banana-based agronomy, and the ancient underground tunnel networks (Kibo Caves) originally built for protection during Maasai raids. The Chagga Cultural Museum in Moshi preserves and presents this remarkable civilisation through curated collections of traditional tools, wedding regalia, medicinal herbs, and oral history recordings. Guided cultural tours connect visitors directly with Chagga families who demonstrate traditional beer brewing from bananas (mbege), blacksmithing, and the construction of makuti-thatched homes. The Chagga are also Tanzania's primary Arabica coffee cultivators; the Kilimanjaro Coffee Tour — often combined with a museum visit — offers a farm-to-cup experience on the mountain's lush lower slopes. The Tanzania Cultural Tourism Programme (TCTP), supported by the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV), has certified several Chagga cultural experiences as community-based tourism products since 1996.
