About Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania's most rewarding but frequently underestimated wildlife destinations — a 2,850 km² wilderness of iconic ancient baobab trees, seasonal swamps, and the life-giving Tarangire River that transforms into a concentrated wildlife corridor during the dry season. During June to October, Tarangire hosts what wildlife biologist Holly Dublin (WWF, 1991) described as 'one of the most impressive dry-season elephant aggregations in Africa' — herds of 200–300 elephants gathering at the river's shrinking pools are a regular sighting. The park's baobab trees — some estimated over 1,000 years old — provide a distinctive backdrop that distinguishes Tarangire from the open plains of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Tarangire is also renowned for its outstanding birdlife, with over 550 recorded species including five species of hornbill, the ashy starling (endemic to the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem), and large breeding colonies of yellow-collared lovebirds. The park's northern circuit passes through the Silale Swamp — a year-round water source that attracts hippo, crocodile, and wading birds in extraordinary concentrations. Evening game drives frequently yield cheetah, wild dog, and tree-climbing lions in the Tamarind woodland zones.

How to Get Here

Tarangire is 118 km south of Arusha via the Arusha–Dodoma highway (A104). Main gate (Tarangire Gate) is clearly signposted. Fly-in options available via small airstrips within the park — charter flights from Arusha Airport. Self-drive in 4WD vehicles permitted; guided safaris available from all Arusha operators.
