About Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park, covering 14,763 square kilometres of endless golden plains in northern Tanzania, hosts the Great Wildebeest Migration — a circular annual journey of approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebra, and 500,000 gazelle that has been described by National Geographic as 'the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth'. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1981, the Serengeti ecosystem spans the Tanzania–Kenya border and forms the largest intact savannah ecosystem remaining in Africa. The park supports the densest lion population in Africa — estimated at over 3,000 individuals by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI, 2021) — alongside 48 other carnivore species, over 500 bird species, and the full complement of the Big Five. The river crossings at the Mara and Grumeti rivers (July–October) — where thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters — are among the most dramatic natural events a traveller can witness. Hot air balloon safaris at dawn, flying over migration columns stretching to the horizon, provide an aerial perspective unavailable anywhere else in Africa. The Serengeti's name derives from the Maasai word 'Siringet' meaning 'the place where the land runs on forever' — an observation that remains as accurate today as it was centuries ago.

How to Get Here

Main gate (Naabi Hill) is 335 km from Arusha via Ngorongoro. Seronera airstrip in the park's centre is served by regional flights from Arusha and Kilimanjaro. Multiple budget, mid-range, and luxury lodges and camps operate throughout the park. Self-drive is permitted but most visitors use licensed safari operators.

Traveller Tips

  • Pack layers — nights are cold

Despite being near the equator, the altitude (1,500m+) makes nights cold (8–12°C). Bring a warm fleece and windproof jacket even in dry season. Mornings on game drives before 7am can be very cold.
  • Book a fly-in safari for vast distances

The Serengeti is 14,763 km² — driving between zones takes 4+ hours on corrugated tracks. Internal charter flights (Coastal Aviation, Air Excel) connect Seronera, Kogatende, Grumeti, and Ndutu airstrips efficiently.
  • Best time for the Great Migration

The river crossings at the Mara River happen July–October near Kogatende. Calving season (Jan–Feb) in the southern Serengeti offers equally dramatic viewing with predators following the herds.
