Arusha City — Safari Capital of Africa

Arusha stands at the geographic and commercial heart of Tanzania's tourism industry — a bustling, cosmopolitan city of approximately 416,000 residents (NBS Census, 2022) perched at 1,400 metres on the slopes of Mount Meru. The city is the operational headquarters for virtually every northern circuit safari: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Kilimanjaro, and Lake Manyara all radiate outward from Arusha within a half-day's drive or short charter flight. Arusha played a pivotal role in modern African history as the site of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR, 1994–2015) and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. The Arusha Declaration of 1967 — in which Julius Nyerere articulated Tanzania's philosophy of Ujamaa (African socialism) — was signed here, and the Clock Tower at the city's centre is symbolically positioned at the midpoint of the Cape Town–Cairo highway. The Cultural Heritage Centre, the largest arts market in East Africa, displays over 30,000 pieces of Tanzanian art, Tinga Tinga paintings, Makonde sculpture, and Maasai beadwork. Arusha's highland climate — warm days (22–26°C) and cool nights (10–15°C) — makes it one of the most pleasant urban environments in sub-Saharan Africa year-round.
