About Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the geological and ecological crown jewel of northern Tanzania — a collapsed volcanic caldera 2,286 metres above sea level, 19 kilometres across, and covering 304 square kilometres of pristine highland savannah, marshland, and soda lake. Formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward, the crater floor is now home to an estimated 25,000 large mammals — including Africa's densest population of lions, the endangered black rhinoceros (approximately 26 individuals as of NCAA census, 2023), large herds of elephant, Cape buffalo, spotted hyena, and over 500 bird species. Unlike the Serengeti, where animals migrate freely, Ngorongoro's resident wildlife populations remain largely within the caldera walls year-round — a natural enclosure that makes it one of the most reliable wildlife-viewing destinations on the continent. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), established in 1959 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, is unique in Africa as a multiple land-use area that allows the Maasai pastoralists to continue living alongside wildlife within its boundaries. The view from the crater rim at sunrise — when mist fills the caldera and the volcanic walls glow amber — is consistently cited by travel writers as one of Africa's transcendent experiences. How to Get Here

The Ngorongoro Crater rim is 180 km west of Arusha on the A104 highway. All visitors must enter via NCAA gates (Lodoare Gate is the main entrance). Descent into the crater is permitted only in 4WD vehicles with a licensed guide. Self-drive visitors require prior NCAA clearance. Many visitors combine Ngorongoro with a Serengeti itinerary.

Traveller Tips

  • Conservation fee is per vehicle per day

The crater charges USD 295 per vehicle per day in addition to the per-person conservation fee. Only 4WD vehicles are permitted on the crater floor. Visitor numbers are capped at 60 vehicles simultaneously.
  • Black rhino sightings require patience

The crater hosts one of Tanzania's last wild black rhino populations (~25 individuals). They are most often seen at Lerai Forest and Ngoitokitok Springs. Ask your driver-guide to tune into the rhino sighting radio network.
  • Enter the crater floor before 8am

The descent road opens at 6am and the crater floor is at its best in early morning light. Animals are most active, temperatures are cool, and you will beat the midday vehicle congestion. All vehicles must exit by 6pm.
