About Mount Meru

At 4,566 metres, Mount Meru is Africa's fifth-highest mountain and one of the continent's most underrated trekking destinations — overshadowed only by its more famous neighbour Kilimanjaro, visible 70 km to the east on clear mornings from the summit. The mountain is an active stratovolcano; its last major eruption occurred in 1910, and the dramatic inner crater wall drops 1,500 metres to a still-steaming ash cone that geologists classify as a zone of potential future activity. The four-day traverse through Arusha National Park offers what many seasoned guides describe as a more intimate and raw mountain experience than Kilimanjaro — dense Hagenia woodland, open alpine meadows, and the narrow ridge walk on summit day, where climbers traverse an exposed knife-edge with sheer drops on both sides. Wildlife encounters are uniquely possible at altitude: giraffe, buffalo, elephant, and colobus monkeys are frequently seen in the lower forest zones. Armed rangers accompany all trekking groups due to buffalo and elephant presence on trail. Mount Meru is officially recognised as one of the best acclimatisation treks before a Kilimanjaro ascent by the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), with physiological studies showing improved summit success rates on Kilimanjaro following a prior Meru climb.

How to Get Here

Momella Gate (entry to Arusha National Park) is 25 km northeast of Arusha town. Accessible by paved road; transfers available from Arusha. Armed ranger escort is mandatory and arranged at the gate. Three mountain huts (Mirikamba, Saddle, and Rhino Point) provide accommodation on the trail.
