About Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park occupies a narrow 325 km² strip between the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment — rising 600 metres above the park floor — and the alkaline waters of Lake Manyara itself, which covers roughly two-thirds of the park's total area. The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a behaviour first documented here by Hans Kruuk and observed regularly in the park's acacia woodlands, where prides of up to eight lions drape themselves across branches 3–4 metres above the ground — a unique adaptation whose origin is debated among wildlife researchers (likely related to fly avoidance or the behaviour of following baboon troops into trees). The alkaline lake — part of the East African Rift System — supports up to 75,000 lesser flamingos and 75,000 greater flamingos, whose concentrations turn the lake's shallows a vivid pink during peak aggregation periods (November–January), alongside large breeding colonies of pelicans, yellow-billed storks, and 400+ additional bird species, making Manyara one of Tanzania's premier birdwatching destinations. The groundwater forest zone — fed by springs seeping from the escarpment — supports one of Tanzania's largest concentrations of baboons and a dense elephant population that frequently greets vehicles at close range on the park's single main road. Ernest Hemingway visited Manyara in 1933, and his impressions influenced descriptions in 'Green Hills of Africa'.
