About Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park, covering 552 square kilometres on the slopes of Mount Meru, is Tanzania's most geographically diverse national park — compressing montane forest, alkaline lakes, crater lakes, open grassland, and the summit of Africa's fifth-highest mountain into a single compact wilderness accessible within 30 minutes of Arusha city. The park's seven Momella Lakes — shallow alkaline water bodies fed by underground springs — attract vast flocks of flamingo, pelican, and waterfowl, and each lake is tinted a different shade of green or blue depending on its algae composition. Arusha National Park is unique in Tanzania as the only park where walking safaris are permitted without a special concession, allowing visitors to track giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and warthog on foot alongside an armed ranger. The park's forests host one of Tanzania's densest populations of black-and-white Colobus monkeys — frequently spotted in the fig trees along the Ngurdoto Crater rim trail. Ngurdoto Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera within the park, has been called 'Little Ngorongoro' for its lush crater floor visible only from the rim — no vehicles are allowed inside, preserving it as an undisturbed wildlife sanctuary.
