Tabora Region occupies Tanzania's geographic heart, a vast plateau of miombo woodland and seasonal grasslands crisscrossed by old caravan routes that once carried ivory and slaves from the interior to the coast. The town of Tabora was a crucial staging post for 19th-century explorers David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. Livingstone's tembe — the clay house where he recuperated in 1871 — still stands as a protected monument and pilgrimage site for history enthusiasts. The region's miombo woodland is one of Africa's most extensive carbon-sink ecosystems, sheltering sable antelope, roan, and abundant birdlife. Tabora's railway junction, connecting Dar es Salaam to Mwanza and Kigoma, makes it an authentic slow-travel crossroads.
