Pwani

Pwani (Coast) Region curves along 400 km of Indian Ocean shoreline between Dar es Salaam and the Mozambique border, delivering some of East Africa's most spectacular and accessible beaches, mangrove forests, and coral reef systems. Saadani National Park — Africa's only coastal wildlife sanctuary where elephant, lion, and giraffe roam to within metres of the beach — straddles the region's northern coast. The Rufiji River Delta, cradle of ancient mangrove ecosystems and feeding ground for dugongs, empties into the ocean within Pwani's bounds. Traditional dhow fishing, arabic-influenced Swahili architecture in coastal villages, and pristine dive sites around Mafia Island make Pwani an often- overlooked gem for travellers who prefer empty white sand to resort crowds.
