Njombe Region crowns Tanzania's southern highlands, a mist-shrouded montane world of tea plantations, pine forests, and rushing highland rivers that ranks as the nation's highest and coolest region. The Kipengere Range and Livingstone Mountains rise to over 2,900 m, their slopes carpeted in some of East Africa's finest high- altitude tea. The Udźungwa Mountains, an arc of biodiversity rivalling Madagascar, shelter six primate species — including the endangered Kipunji monkey, discovered only in 2003 — alongside over 400 bird species. Njombe's highland trout streams attract fly-fishing enthusiasts, while the weekly markets in Njombe town burst with temperate produce: strawberries, apples, and avocados impossible to find elsewhere in Tanzania.
