Morogoro Region sweeps from the Swahili coast inland across the Uluguru Mountains — biodiversity hotspots harbouring dozens of endemic chameleon, frog, and bird species found nowhere else on the planet — to the edge of the vast Selous (Nyerere National Park), the largest game reserve in Africa. Morogoro town sits at the foot of the Ulugurus in a garden of mango trees and bougainvillea, a pleasant university city known as 'the town in the garden.' The Mikumi National Park, easily accessible from Dar es Salaam, is a popular weekend safari destination where lions lounge near the highway. The Ruaha River corridor links Mikumi to the remote Ruaha National Park, creating one of Africa's largest contiguous wildlife ecosystems.
