Mara

Mara Region hugs the southeastern shore of Lake Victoria, Tanzania's slice of the world's second-largest freshwater lake. The Serengeti's iconic wildebeest migration pours across the Mara River within this region's borders — one of nature's greatest spectacles, dramatised by river crossings where crocodiles and hippos await. Musoma, the regional capital, is a lively port city whose fish markets overflow with Nile perch and tilapia freshly hauled from the lake. The region is also home to significant Sukuma and Kurya communities, preserving vibrant dance traditions and iron-smelting heritage. Largely overlooked by mass tourism, Mara offers an authentic, crowd-free window into northern Tanzania's wild corridor.
