Kigoma Region presses against the Democratic Republic of Congo along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika — the world's second-deepest lake and one of its oldest, harbouring over 350 endemic cichlid fish species found nowhere else on Earth. Gombe Stream National Park, accessible only by boat, is where Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking chimpanzee research in 1960, a study that transformed our understanding of primate behaviour and still continues. The turquoise waters of Tanganyika invite snorkelling, kayaking, and sunset dhow cruises. Kigoma town, the regional capital, retains a languid colonial character — the old German station and Ujiji village, where Stanley found Livingstone in 1871 with his immortal greeting 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume?', lie just 8 km away.
