Geita

Geita Region, carved from Mwanza in 2012, is dominated by gold — both literally and economically. Geita Gold Mine is one of Africa's largest open-pit gold mines, producing over 500,000 oz annually and transforming the region's economy. The region borders Lake Victoria's southern shore, whose fishing communities maintain traditional netting techniques alongside industrial trawling. The Geita Rock Paintings at Bwanda preserve Bantu-era ochre art on lakeside granite outcrops, while the varied lakeshore landscapes — papyrus swamps, sandy beaches, and rocky peninsulas — support exceptional bird diversity including the grey-throated barbet. Though primarily known for mining, Geita's lakeshore and hinterland reward adventurous visitors seeking authentic, unpackaged Tanzania.
